Tips for Lists

Many of you may have noticed the rising popularity of content submitted in the "list" format. There have been some excellent lists lately on a number of subjects, including travel, DIY projects, stories about interesting places and characters, and homemaking tips. Some of these articles could be even more compelling if the following tips were followed:

1. Include photos where relevant. Most word processors enable the insertion/embedding of photos within articles you write. Utilize this option and take advantage of it. Photos and images that are relevant to your list items will greatly improve the viewing experience of your content. However, make sure to include images only when if they are an integral part of the content.

2. Pay attention to the length of the list. A list of five items is a little too short, unless it is a really surprising list. A list of eighteen items, on the other hand, may be too exhausting for the reader. 10 is the magic number of items on a list. This is the optimal number of items to include in a list.

3. Pay attention to the length of each list item. Don't just use headings as list items and expect them to be sufficient. Write a decent paragraph for each item. Elaborate. Link to references that support your argument.

Ironically, the tip list above contains only three items with no photos… then again, this is not the type of list we are talking about.
